The Philadelphia Phillies made a few trades at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, with their big move being the acquisition of All-Star second baseman Luis Arraez.

He's been great for the Phillies so far in the few games he's been with the team, but this trade pickup for Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies nearly didn't happen.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale notes that the Phillies and San Francisco Giants hit a snag in their trade talks. That issue revolved around the one-for-one nature of the initial offer between the Phillies and Giants.

"The Phillies and Giants' one-for-one deal of Arraez for prospect Ramon Marquez was dead late Sunday night, only for the San Francisco Giants to re-engage late in the night," Nightengale writes. "The trade discussions expanded to include Phillies reliever prospect Marty Gair and Giants reliever Caleb Kilian when the two sides finally agreed to a deal, pending physicals."

This deal between the Phillies and Giants was initially proposed as a one-for-one swap of Marquez for Arraez. While the deal nearly didn't happen over that hold-up, it turned into a good thing for Philadelphia.

Being able to tack on Kilian, and intriging right-handed reliever with some upside, onto this trade while only giving up Gair to make a deal work was a nice change for the Phillies.

As good as Arraez has been, had the Phillies given up a breakout starting pitching prospect like Marquez in exchange for a rental in Arraez straight-up, there might have been more frustrations from the Phillies fanbase.

But, because the trade fell through late Sunday, the Phillies got a blessing in disguise, as they were able to land Arraez, pick up Kilian, and not have to give up much more than Marquez with Gair's inclusion in the deal.

While Dombrowski should have added more bullpen, rotation, and outfield help at this year's deadline, the deal for Arraez is proving to be a good one already. And it was an even better deal thanks to the initial offer falling through before deadline day.
