Phillies' top pitching prospect has stellar Double-A debut originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the hotter names in the Philadelphia Phillies’ prospect pipeline is that of Gage Wood, who was ranked as the fourth-highest prospect in the farm system earlier in the season. Following his stellar performances with the Clearwater Threshers in Single-A ball, Wood was promoted to Philadelphia’s Double-A affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils, earlier in the month, which coincided with his ranking on MiLB.com’s prospect page rising to the second rank behind Aidan Miller.
Making a jump like this could take some adjusting to for some players, but it doesn’t appear to be that way for Wood, as he took to the mound against the Portland Sea Dogs for his first start with Reading.

In three innings of work against Portland, the 22-year-old would throw 56 pitches, facing 14 batters, fanning six of them in the process while allowing a single earned run. While Wood would be handed the loss as Reading fell 2-1, his precision on the mound against higher-level talent is a sign that the Phillies' farm system has something potentially special to keep an eye on.
But it's worth noting that MiLB’s prospect page has Wood’s ETA for MLB playtime set for 2027, which, given that he has two more levels before playing in the major leagues, means that the Philadelphia faithful might have to wait a little longer before seeing him take the mound at Citizens Bank Park.
