PHILADELPHIA – The other team was from New York, which brought a particularly uncompromising edge to the sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park the night of July 24.
Many in attendance actually voiced their preference for those visiting Yankees, which only served to raise the decibel level and certainly the hackles of those in the majority supporting the Phillies.
When Paul Goldschmidt became the game’s first baserunner while launching a solo homer into the right-field seats to open the fourth inning, he earned quite a roar from the Yankee mob, which promptly spawned vociferous retaliative booing from the home crowd.
And so it went, back and forth, each trying to outroot the other, in a Friday night series opener between second-place teams aiming to close the gap on division leaders while maintaining wild-card form.
The Phillies arrived 4½ games behind the Braves in the National League East while the Yankees trailed American League East front-runner Tampa Bay by just two games.
Starting pitchers Jesus Luzardo from the Phillies and Cam Schlitter for the Yankees became the star of the show.
Luzardo allowed just three hits and that one run while striking out nine over his seven innings, and even the pitch Goldschmidt smacked for the lone run in what became a 1-0 Yankees win “wasn’t terrible,” interim manager Don Mattingly said.
“Right there,” Luzardo said of where he wanted that pitch. “Sinker down, 2-0, just trying to get back in the zone, just put a good swing on it. He’s been around for a long time.”
But Schlitter was superior while exposing a recent Phillies weakness -- getting hits and scoring runs – that should continue to compel the Phillies to make deals with the Aug. 3 trade deadline looming.
He allowed three hits and struck out 12 as his ERA fell to 2.07.
“He bullies you a little bit with the fastball, both sides, kinda makes it go both ways,” said Mattingly, who frequently saw Schlitter last year when he was bench coach for the Blue Jays. “He was good. I don’t think this guy’s getting hit very often hard.’’
The volume did rise and Phillies prospects did improve in the bottom of the eighth, when they chased Schlitter. J.T Realmuto singled and Gabriel Rincones walked with one out. Edmundo Sosa then singled so hard to right field off reliever Brent Headrick that Realmuto had no chance to score.
But Trea Turner lined out to left and Kyle Schwarber grounded out – both on hard hit balls – to end the threat. David Bednar then came on and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to make the Yanks 1-0 winners.
The Phillies lost two of three at home against the Mets and Dodgers after the All-Star Break, managing just one run in three of those four defeats. Those offensive struggles continued Friday night.
“I’m not necessarily concerned about it,” said Realmuto, who had two of the Phillies’ four hits. “We’re playing good teams. We’d definitely like to be playing better baseball. We’re just a little inconsistent right now throughout the lineup, not scoring enough runs.”
The Phillies are an incredible 42-16 in games started by Luzardo, Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler (and 14-32 in games started by others).
But their lack of productive undermined them in this one and will in more games if trade-deadline changes don’t come and provide the necessary spark.
“We’re playing some good clubs.” Mattingly said. “We’re running into some guys who throw the ball well. I just think we’re in a little bit of a lull right now . . . Don’t want to read too much into it. Just come back ready to play tomorrow.”
