Phillies' Cristopher Sánchez extends scoreless streak to 29.2 innings with shutout of Pirates originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The National League East has gotten a bit tighter over the last few weeks, and that has been thanks to teh resurgence of the Philadelphia Phillies. Now at 24-23 on the year, they now only sit 8 games back of one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, the Atlanta Braves.
One of the reasons that they have been able to storm back, and finally notch themselves in the .500 club, is due to their pitching. Namely, Cristopher Sánchez, who has been dominant lately. At 5-2 on the season, with a free-falling ERA of 1.82, his most recent start against the Pittsburgh Pirates was a complete-game shutout.
Now, he has not allowed an earned run in 29.2 straight innings. In Saturday's shutout of the Bucs', he only needed 108 pitches, and struck out a career-high 13 batters. This was the second shutout of his career, and the first one came back on June 28, 2024 against the Miami Marlins.
Sánchez has been everything for this ballclub lately, and the consistency on the bump is giving this team some much needed life. Of course, they are also getting the bats as well with DH Kyle Schwarber nailing his 20th home run of the season in that shutout win.
The Braves are continuing to run away with the Division lead, but there is still a long summer ahead. If Sánchez can keep this scoreless streak going, they can gain ground slowly, but surely. The race for second might be in hand for the Phils' in 2026 thanks to No. 61.
