Cristopher Sánchez has passed one Hall of Famer in the record book and has more in his sights.
Sánchez, the Philadelphia Phillies left-hander, set a record for consecutive scoreless innings by a left-hander with a spotless first inning against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, June 3 at Citizens Bank Park.
His first inning of work against the Padres vaulted him from 11th on the all-time streak list to a tie for No. 6 with Zack Greinke. He then passed Greinke with a scoreless second inning, pushing his streak to 46⅔ innings
Along the way, he passed a pair of left-handers − Doc White and Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell − for longest scoreless streak by a southpaw. White set his mark in 1904 and Hubbell passed him in 1933.
Sánchez is attempting to beat the Padres for the second time in six days. Should he pitch three scoreless innings, he will pass Hall of Famer Bob Gibson for fifth place all time.
Sánchez is ultimately aiming for Los Angeles Dodger Orel Hershiser's streak of 59 innings set in 1988. He can get as high as fourth place against the Padres, as Gibson and Jack Coombs (53 innings, 1910) are within reach.
The Dodgers' Don Drysdale (58 innings) ranks second and Walter "Big Train" Johnson is third, at 55⅔ innings in 1913.
Sanchez entered his June 3 start coming off Pitcher of the Month honors for May, when he gave up no runs, struck out 45 and walked three. For the season, Sánchez was 6-2 with a 1.47 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 79⅓ innings.
He last gave up a run to the San Francisco Giants on April 30.
