Major League Baseball typically takes on the task of announcing Home Run Derby participants on its own media channels.
Bryce Harper broke the news of his participation to his 1.7 million Instagram followers all by himself.
“Derby at home? Sure why not? #HRD” read the post on his personal account July 9.

The substance of the announcement was hardly a surprise. Philadelphia is hosting the Derby at Citizens Bank Park on July 13. Phillies fans would love nothing more than to see the All-Star first baseman, the face of the franchise, win the event at home.
He’ll join a field of participants that already included Jordan Walker, Willson Contreras, Jac Caglianone, Ben Rice and Junior Caminero.

Harper, who was selected by commissioner Rob Manfred to the National League All-Star team, won the 2018 Home Run Derby in Washington D.C. as a member of the Washington Nationals. He’ll try to become the fifth player ever to win multiple derbies.
Harper also competed in the 2013 Home Run Derby, when he finished as the runner-up to Yoenis Cespedes.
