Next season will be the Philadelphia Eagles' fifth consecutive year with a new offensive coordinator. Sean Mannion takes over at OC for the fired Kevin Patullo, who flopped during his one season in the role.
From 2022-24, the Eagles had an offense ranked in the top ten in both points scored and yardage gained. This year, however, they finished 24th in total offense and 19th in scoring. That's a pretty big drop-off in one year, especially for a reigning Super Bowl champion. While Patullo is an obvious and very worthy scapegoat, it was actually quarterback Jalen Hurts who received most of the scorn from Eagles fans.
Former Eagles quarterback Rodney Peete knows this feeling all too well, from first hand experience. His time in Philadelphia was obvioulsy a very different type of gig from when he did color commentary for Kitten Bowl V. According to Peete, you can't just win in Philadelphia, you have to win with style points.
“It’s amazing, because I understand it 100% because I played in Philly for four years, sometimes that’s not good enough,” Peete said in an exclusive with Ratings.org. “That’s not good enough for the Philly fans, that’s not good enough for the Philly media.
"Then the rest of the media around the country starts to pick up on that, and people forget they’re the Super Bowl champions. Jalen Hurts is a Super Bowl MVP, and so you hear all the noise, and people that don’t know Philly, don’t really understand what that’s all about.”
Yes, the harsh stereotype surrounding Philly sports fans sounds kind of true, according to Peete. Even during the next year after winning it all, sports fans in the city of brotherly love remain extremely demanding and harshly critical.
So what might appease them, when they are on the clock at #23 on draft night? Well, booing your team's draft selection, regardless of the pick, is a tradition across the whole NFL. (Versus booing Santa Claus, that's an Eagles fan thing).
Getting a draft pick right isn't about eliciting cheers from the crowd during the event itself. It's about finding the right fit, and in this site's latest mock draft update, we have Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq going to the Eagles.
Sadiq would slot in nicely, as he's the perfect combination in pass-catching prowess and blocking ability that you would want in a tight end. Other tight ends in this class might be better at pass catching, or blocking, than Sadiq. However, no other TE is as good as him at both. Sadiq would excel in an offense built around Saquon Barkley, and he would provide a much needed added spark in the passing game too.
