A week after Michael Brennan threatened to tie the Tour’s record for most consecutive made birdies in a round, Sahith Theegala challenged — and eventually tied — the mark for most birdies to open a round by carding six consecutive circle to start his Wyndham Championship.

Theegala's attempt at the record seventh straight birdie came at the par-3 7th, where he bogeyed to fall back to 5 under through seven holes.

And all that drama came within an hour after Beau Hossler signed his first round 61 to become the clubhouse leader — the fifth such low score in three weeks.

With course conditions primed for low scoring, Theegala could certainly challenge for a sub-60 score on Thursday. Golf Channel will be carrying live Round 1 coverage beginning at 3 p.m.

Brennan, who made eight straight birdies at the Rocket Classic, fell one shy of tying the record for most consecutive birdies at any point during a PGA Tour round. Mark Calcavecchia (2009 RBC Canadian Open) and Kevin Chappell (2019 A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier), who started their streaks on the back nine rather than hole No. 1, each recorded nine straight circles.
