Rory McIlroy needed to work on a few more things before the 2025 Masters, and a late run of birdies at Memorial Park will let him do just that.
McIlroy birdied Nos. 15, 16 and 17 in the second round of play on Friday, pushing his score to 4 under for the 2025 Texas Children's Houston Open. That placed him safely inside the cutline for the event, which ended up at minus 3.
"It's pretty nice. It was a little dicey there at the end," McIlroy said after Friday's play. "I was just happy I had that shot cushion coming up the last because it was getting pretty dark. Yeah, look, nice to finish, nice to finish the round the way I did and looking forward to hopefully an uninterrupted weekend and get another 36 holes. Just try to, you know, keep improving and keep getting a little bit better."
The final cut wasn't decided until Saturday morning due to wet conditions and weather delays. Here are a few of the names who were sent packing from the Houston Open.
After a great run in the Players Championship in which he lost to Rory McIlroy, but a rough stretch at the end of the first round tanked Spaun's chances to make the weekend.
After making the cut in five straight events, Kim struggled to a 73 in the opening round at Memorial Park and was sent home after 36 holes.
The Canadian had trouble on Thursday during the first round of play and although he rallied with a 67, but it wasn't enough to reach the weekend.
The Ohio native has struggled since his T3 finish at the American Express. Lower went 5 over through his last dozen holes in the opening round and despite a solid back nine in the second round, it wasn't enough to reach the weekend. This marks the fifth time in seven starts in which he hasn't made the third round.
This was one that has to sting for McGreevy, who fell apart on the back nine during the second round. After a 68 on Thursday, McGreevy posted four bogeys in his final eight holes and missed the cut for the first time in six tournaments.
Palmer loves to play in his native Texas, but he struggled at Memorial Park, following up a 79 with a 77 in the second round. Palmer, who helped with input on the renovations at Colonial Country Club, hopes to play better in other Texas tournaments, including the Charles Schwab Challenge.
