Pro Football Focus is always offering up grades on players and teams. Those are all counted by adding up various plays and moments in games, and then they go into a formula, and a grade is generated as a number. However, when it comes to NFL Free Agency, PFF is switching to the alphabet as they are dishing out grades on every team's free agency signing.
PFF's Gordon McGuinness published his free agency grades on the Vikings two signings. He gave them a solid grade in the form of a B.
On the James Pierre signing, he wrote, "Pierre looked really good in limited work in 2025, earning an 86.2 PFF overall grade on 408 snaps, so this is a worthwhile swing of the bat for the Vikings. It's a bigger contract than PFF was projecting, but even if all he is is a good depth player, it's a perfectly reasonable signing. The upside is that if Pierre can continue to improve, as we saw this past season, the Vikings could be getting a starting-caliber cornerback for a steal."
James Pierre projects as someone the team will utilize on the outside opposite Isaiah Rodgers. Byron Murphy Jr. will remain the nickel option for the team, giving them three reliable cornerbacks for the first time in several years. The experiment with Jeff Okudah did not work, but Pierre projects as someone in a tier or two above him at this point.
On the Kyler Murray signing, McGuinness wrote, "After a trying 2025 season that saw Murray play just five games, he lands in an ideal landing spot with the Vikings. Murray hasn’t been as dynamic over the last three years with a 74.3 PFF passing grade, tossing 48 big-time throws compared to 43 turnover-worthy plays, but he’s still a high-ceiling starter who should push J.J. McCarthy. If Murray plays like peak form, this will look like an absolute bargain."
Murray is going to have mild to high expectations in 2026 if he earns the starting job. As a result, he is going to have this team be a must watch.
