It's been three days since the North Carolina Tar Heels had a shocking loss in the NCAA Tournament to VCU, blowing a 19-point lead. That loss has now elevated the storyline of Hubert Davis' future with the program and whether or not he will be the coach come next season.
Right now, the pressure is on for a change as the program has lost in the first round in two-straight NCAA Tournaments. But where do things stand now?
ESPN's Pete Thamel has been reporting on the situation the past few days and his update on Sunday morning offers just a little more clarity. Thamel says that Davis is still unlikely to return to North Carolina next season and that it will likely be some sort of mutual parting between the sides.
As for a timeline, well he provided an update on that as well.
"The Hubert Davis watch continues. His return as North Carolina coach remains unlikely," Thamel said. "The timing and the mechanics of that expected departure are still being hashed out. Right after this show on ESPN, North Carolina's women's team hosts an NCAA sub-regional there. Once that event is cleared through with UNC administrators, expect more focus to be on Davis' situation."
Thamel went on to say that there is not an expectation for a firing but rather some sort of organized resignation is expected instead.
This story is one that will continue to move quickly and should be resolved in the coming days. But for now, it's still likely that UNC will be with a new head coach next season.
