While the NCAA Tournament continues through the second round on Sunday, the situation concerning North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Hubert Davis is ongoing in Chapel Hill.
After blowing a 19-point lead to the VCU Rams in the first round of the tournament — the biggest blown lead that the tournament has seen since 2018 — the No. 6-seed Tar Heels are going home rather than moving on to face the No. 3-seed Illinois Fighting Illini. As a result, it could mean a change of leadership with the potential removal of head coach Hubert Davis.
Multiple reports indicate that the Tar Heels are strongly considering dismissing Davis, who has coached for five seasons at North Carolina, going 125-54 in that time. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, it is "unlikely" that Davis will return for the 2026-27 season.
"The Hubert Davis watch continues as we reported yesterday. His return as North Carolina's coach remains unlikely," Thamel said on Sunday. "The timing and mechanics of that expected departure are still being hashed out."
This comes a day after North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham said publicly that they are "evaluating all aspects" of the men's basketball program, including whether or not Davis would stay on for another year. However, it appears the Tar Heels are unlikely to fire Davis, and an "orchestrated resignation" is more likely, according to Thamel.
"There's not an expectation that UNC is going to fire Hubert Davis," Thamel said. "I've been told that some type of orchestrated resignation has been discussed, and is a potential outcome here for Hubert Davis and UNC."
This loss to VCU means North Carolina has failed to reach the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons.
On Sunday, North Carolina's women's basketball team takes on the Maryland Terrapins in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After that game, Thamel says that the athletic department is expected to shift full focus to Davis and his future, hoping to make a decision soon.
