Thursday night was a busy one for Pete Carroll. In addition to his weekly USC class, he had his first NFL draft as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. With his first draft pick in Vegas, Carroll made headlines by taking Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty at No. 6.
Jeanty rewrote the rushing record book in 2024. He carried the ball 374 times for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns—by far the most in the country. Jeanty finished as the Heisman Trophy runner up and led Boise State to a Mountain West championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Now, he heads to Las Vegas at Carroll's first draft pick with the Raiders. He will join an offense led by new quarterback Geno Smith, wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, and rising star tight end Brock Bowers.
Carroll's best teams at USC and with the Seattle Seahawks featured star running backs. With the Trojans he won two national championships with Reggie Bush and LenDale White, and in Seattle he won a Super Bowl with Marshawn Lynch (and possibly would have won a second one had he given Lynch the ball on the one yard-line). Carroll is seemingly hoping that Jeanty can take on a similar role in Las Vegas.
