The Penn State Nittany Lions have just received an unfortunate bit of news surrounding the outlook of their potential second string QB. According to several reports, transfer Alex Manske is set to miss spring practices with the team due to a medical procedure. The redshirt freshman was seen as an exciting prospect after following Matt Campbell to Happy Valley.
More concerningly, Manske had also missed spring practices when he was at Iowa State last year with an elbow issue. While he earned the QB2 job under Becht last year, this year could be tougher in what appears to be a crowded, uncertain QB room behind the presumptive QB1 in Becht.
With Manske sidelined, Connor Barry, a former All-American in Division III, has a chance to earn the QB2 role. With the other two QBs in the race true freshmen in Kase Evans, a former Iowa State recruit, and Peyton Falzone, an early signee in Penn State's class, Barry's experience could carry the day.
Manske did earn game experience last year in Ames, going 4 for 5 for 28 yards in games against Cincinnati and TCU. Still, with him being sidelined for the last two springs under the same staff, there are questions about his abilities and health arising.
"He's learned from Rocco, but now he just needs reps," Penn State QBs coach Jake Waters said in February, according to 247Sports. "He needs to clean up footwork here and there, decision-making here and there. He just needs to double down and learn the whole big picture of being an elite college quarterback."
With Becht taking on light work as well, it has not been the best of starts for the two new QBs in Happy Valley.
