After a whirlwind of a transfer portal season where Matt Campbell pillaged many of his loyalists from Iowa State, it was hard to keep track of Penn State football’s new roster.
Plenty of new faces came to town, including a brand new QB1 in Rocco Becht. While Becht’s move to Happy Valley turned plenty of heads, my attention was zeroed in on his favorite target in 2025: Benjamin Brahmer.
The six-foot-seven tight end has since reunited with Becht and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser at Penn State to re-create the triple-headed monster that was so potent at Iowa State. Brahmer, in particular, is poised to have a true breakout year as a senior.
The Nebraska native had his 2024 season cut short due to injury, but returned with a bang in 2025 to the tune of 37 catches, 446 yards, and six scores. All the physical tools are there, and the results have started to follow, but he and Becht have yet to be truly healthy at the same time. As Becht recovers from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, the stars are aligning for this to change in 2026.
One of the most exciting things about Brahmer’s upside in 2026 is how he would fit into a generally more balanced Penn State offensive attack. Campbell has brought in a lot of talent at wide receiver, and his regime has a track record of producing 1,000-yard seasons from their wideouts. Combine this with the Nittany Lions’ existing talent at tight end, and suddenly you’re trying to figure out who’s covering the 250-pound man in the red zone.
Brahmer will likely suit up next to the incumbent Andrew Rappleyea for a one-two punch at tight end, with Rapp handling some of the traditional blocking assignments. This, in theory, should free Brahmer up to be more of a hybrid tight end/receiver archetype, as both a reliable failsafe for Becht and a true vertical threat. Mouser, who loves running jumbo tight end formations, and Campbell also brought in redshirt senior Gabe Burkle from Iowa State. Who’s down for 13 personnel?
Is Brahmer a shoo-in to be the next great Penn State tight end? Not necessarily. But a lot of pieces are falling into place to set him up for a monster 2026 campaign, and I’m excited to see how he fairs in the Big Ten.
