While Penn State has certainly become a hodgepodge of countless different transfers as they make the transition from James Franklin to Matt Campbell, one holdover has been called upon to lead the charge for the Nittany Lions on and off the field. Tony Rojas' coming back has completely changed the complexion of what the Nittany Lions can be capable of this season, and it has been reflected off the field.
It was just announced that Tony Rojas had been added to the shortlist for the Lott Impact Award. Named after the USC defender, it wards the player that best embodies the "defensive best in character and performance." Rojas could prove to be the perfect example as someone who can help coach Campbell navigate his first year in the Big Ten. For Rojas, the challenges this year will present for him will be immense, and winning a major trophy could be what ultimately seals the deal on an elite Penn State defense.
While the large bulk of the pressure on Penn State will be on Matt Campbell and all the transfers he brought in, Rojas could be the unifier of everything for the Nittany Lions. On the defensive side of the ball, he could truly be what makes the Nittany Lions tick as an enforcer down the middle. Most importantly, he must prove he can marshal the defense for Matt Campbell should things go wrong for him. If all this happens, Rojas could be a shoo-in for this highly prestigious award...and maybe several more.
