So far, Penn State's recruitment process under Matt Campbell has come along. The Class of 2027 is currently ranked 8th in the nation, with several signees looking to become stalwarts of the Matt Campbell era in Happy Valley. Still, more prospects are on the board for the Nittany Lions, with several making their commitments this weekend. One in particular could be a game changer for the Blue and White in terms of building an offensive identity.
Tomorrow afternoon, it is expected that four star running back Aiden Gibson will make his decision. Penn State is among the five schools that he has narrowed it down to, with many expecting the South Carolina star to join the ranks of the Nittany Lions. Other schools looking for his services are Louisville, UNC, Rutgers, and South Carolina.
Gibson is one of the highest ranked running backs in the class, at 22nd nationally according to 247Sports. He is also the No.8 running back in the state, which could potentially open up a pathway to make even more of a name for himself with the Gamecocks. However, the Nittany Lions are banking on potentially making a later push for Gibson after his initial decision should he not sign with them.
Out of all of Gibson's official visits coming up in the next two months, Penn State's is the third latest, on June 12. It also is the weekend after Gibson visits his home state school. While UNC and Virginia Tech will have the final say, the fact that Penn State can sway Gibson from potentially staying home could turn the tide. Most importantly, Matt Campbell would love to secure a new running back in this class to complement the two pass catchers he has already signed.
All eyes will be on Gibson's decision tomorrow and whether it can potentially change over the next couple of months.
