Penn State's 2026 class gained a new commitment on Friday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions added 3-star safety Darrell Carey to the group, bumping the class ranking from No. 9 up to No. 8 nationally. It's currently the fourth best class in the conference behind No. 1 USC, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 7 Illinois.
Carey attends DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland, the same school Penn State safety Kevin Winston Jr. came from. Winston has declared for the NFL Draft and is projected to go anywhere from Round 1 to Round 3.
Carey ranks as the No. 12 Maryland native, No. 60 safety and No. 718 overall recruit in the cycle, per the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's listed at 6-foot-2 and 188 pounds.
Carey received heavy interest from the in-state Maryland Terrapins, taking an official visit on June 20. His only other official visit was to the Nittany Lions on June 6.
He received interest from several high-profile schools, including offers from Oregon, Texas A&M and South Carolina. He released a Top 5 list on March 6 including those three, as well as the Nittany Lions and Terrapins.
With his commitment, Carey becomes the second safety in the class, joining 4-star Matt Sieg out of Fort Cherry High School in McDonald, Pennsylvania. He marks the second commitment of the month, alongside 4-star quarterback Peyton Falzone, who committed on the 12th.
