The Pittsburgh Penguins will have to make some decisions on their goaltending this offseason.
Pittsburgh has some young options in Sergei Murashov, who impressed in the AHL this season. Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic reported that many in the organization believe the 22-year-old is ready to be in the NHL full-time next year.
Along with Murashov, Yohe predicts Arturs Silovs will return and form a tandem with the Russian.
“I anticipate the Penguins bringing restricted free agent Arturs Silovs back to Pittsburgh next season,” Yohe wrote in an article published on June 15. “He had his ups and downs, but the way he played in the final three games of the postseason made him some fans within the organization. There is a belief that the 25-year-old Silovs, who is quirky but well-liked in the locker room, could join forces with Murashov for a young but talented tandem next season.”
Along with those two, Yohe believes 24-year-old Joel Blomqvist could also make some starts next season for the Penguins, as Pittsburgh is still high on him.
“Speaking of goaltenders, don’t forget about Joel Blomqvist,” Yohe added. “No, he isn’t as flashy as Murashov. He put up a 2.40 GAA and a .913 save percentage during the regular season in Wilkes-Barre. For the sake of comparison, Murashov had a 2.20 GAA and a .919 save percentage. The Penguins are high on Blomqvist, who is only 24. They simply like Murahsov a little more.”
So, according to Yohe, it appears the Penguins are set on a youth movement in net next season.
