P.J. Locke's had quite a journey with the Denver Broncos, and he doesn't want it to end now.
The 29-year-old safety joined Denver's practice squad as an undrafted rookie out of Texas late in the 2019 season. He went on to serve as a key special teams player and rotational defensive back from 2020-2022 before serving as an eight-game fill-in starter in 2023. He followed that up by starting 15 games in 2024, but was replaced by Talanoa Hufanga in 2025.
Locke still ended up starting three regular season games last fall after Brandon Jones went down with an injury, and he's now scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. Despite losing his starting role, Locke hopes to remain in Denver.
“I obviously want to be back here,’’ Locke told the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson, who noted the safety might be willing to take a pay cut in 2026. “I would love to retire here. But I just got to see how it goes.”
After playing on a two-year, $7 million contract as a projected starter, Locke might not be able to command a salary that big this spring, but it's easy to imagine the Broncos bringing him back on a team-friendly deal. After recovering from offseason spinal fusion surgery, Locke appeared in 18 games last fall (including the playoffs), making five starts. He is a valuable rotational backup with starting experience, and the Broncos would be wise to bring him back.
