Rookie Derik Queen registered his ninth 20-point performance of the season on Friday, leading the New Orleans Pelicans to a victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Queen tied a team high with 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocked shots in the 114-106 win at the Smoothie King Center. He finished by shooting 8-of-12 from the field and was a plus-11 in 34 minutes as the Pelicans won for the third time in four games.
The 13th overall pick tallied 12 points in the second half alone, helping the Pelicans overcome a 10-point deficit. He stayed in attack mode throughout his time on the court and came up with several crucial plays down the stretch, which stood out to interim coach James Borrego.
"I thought he was really aggressive tonight, getting downhill, got to the free-throw line, made big shots," Borrego said. "He was trying to playmake for us again, the same thing he always does. The thing I liked tonight was that I just saw a mature, poised young man in the fourth quarter."
Queen is among 10 rookies named to the Rising Stars Game, averaging 12.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and one steal in 49 appearances. He leads the rookie class in rebounding and assists, and is one of three first-year players with multiple 30-point games.
The 21-year-old is just the third player in history to record at least 600 points, 350 rebounds and 200 assists in fewer than 50 games to begin a career, joining Larry Bird and Ben Simmons, according to Stats Perform. He is the youngest player to accomplish that feat.
Queen became a full-time starter on Nov. 16 and has delivered several notable performances, including two triple-doubles. He is dazzling with his playmaking, serving as a hub on offense, and showcasing his overall skill set and ability nightly.
