Tab Vowell has been hired as the Peabody football coach, the school announced Tuesday in a statement on social media.
Vowell replaces Shane Jacobs, who resigned on April 3 after 10 seasons with the program. Vowell had been the Golden Tide's defensive coordinator since joining the program in 2016 prior to his promotion.
Vowell graduated from South Fulton in 1989 and played at UT Martin from 1989-93 before beginning his coaching career. He assistant coaching stints at Obion County, Jackson Central-Merry and Liberty Tech before taking his first head coaching role at North Side in 2009.
Under Vowell from 2009-15, North Side had a 62-22 record with two region championships and two undefeated regular seasons in 2010 and 2012.

Vowell moved to Peabody after the 2015 season and was a key part of the Golden Tide's run of three consecutive TSSAA state championships from 2018-20, including a 44-game winning streak that spanned three calendar years.
“In all my years of coaching, I can’t say there’s been one defining moment that keeps me going,” Vowell said in the statement. “You don’t have to win a state championship for a team to come together. Every team that has come through here is special in its own right.” He adds, “The most rewarding part is watching growth — in the weight room, during practice and on the field. Even in the tough years, when the players graduate, they look back and still remember the good times and know that being dedicated to the game of football was worth it.”
Vowell and his wife, Tracey, have three children, Jake, 23, Chase, 19, and Lauren, 13.
