PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks could get a key bat back in the lineup next week during their series against the reigning World Series champions.

According to Arizona Central’s Nick Piecoro, manager Torey Lovullo said first baseman Pavin Smith could rejoin the club sometime during Arizona’s upcoming series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smith has missed a significant amount of time because of a left elbow injury that resulted in surgery to remove loose bodies and bone chips and led to him being placed on the 60-day injured list.
Smith has been a constant staple for the D-Backs, providing a left-handed bat for the club to pencil into the lineup when opposing starters are right-handed. His return would give Arizona another experienced hitter to add depth in the middle of the order, but it also could reshuffle the current roster because a consequential move would have to be made to create room for the first baseman.

While it is not clear what moves would need to happen upon his return, it will be key to watch as the Diamondbacks begin a difficult stretch of their schedule after returning from their current road trip.
The Snakes have dealt with several injuries throughout the season, making Smith’s return a welcome development for a club trying to keep pace in the National League West. It also allows for flexibility with lineup construction and late-game matchups.

The Diamondbacks will now wait to see whether Smith can complete his recovery in time to rejoin the club during next week’s key divisional matchup.
