SEC analyst Paul Finebaum is softening his stance on Florida football and Jon Sumrall after initially criticizing the hire back in December of 2025. The longtime pundit questioned if Sumrall was the right man for the job, following Billy Napier's chaotic departure.
Finebaum has come around on Sumrall and the Gators as the 2026 season looms, praising the enthusiasm of Florida's new head coach and the energy surrounding the program since his arrival. His shift comes with Florida in the midst of a major overhaul, both culturally and tactically.
The Gators have rebuilt their roster, bringing over 50 players. They will have two new lead coordinators in Brad White and Buster Faulkner, and the team is reshaping its identity with Sumrall attempting to reestablish a championship mindset in the facility.
"I felt okay about them, because I like Sumrall, and I like some of the components that he has brought to the table, but there seemed to be some real momentum now," Finebaum told McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning.
"The only problem with Florida is when you — and this is an old story here — when you look at their schedule, how can they win enough games to be at the bottom fringe of the playoffs, and they need to do it early. Probably Auburn — I think it’s the third week of the year — is probably a game that they’re going to have to win if they’re going to get in contention," he continues.
"So, just in talking to and seeing some raw, and especially talking to Scott Stricklin, it was just how quickly and how different that infrastructure feels and seems, as opposed to what it was under four years of Billy Napier," Finebaum concludes.
Just six months into his tenure, national perceptions are beginning to shift for Sumrall. The Gators boast the No. 3 recruiting class according to 247Sports composite and have won several SEC recruiting battles, positioning the program to be successful for years to come.
Now, the Gators must translate offseason buzz into fall victories. It has already started to translate into credibility.
