Since 2000, college football has witnessed several dominant teams. The Oklahoma Sooners kicked off the decade by winning a national championship, while the 2001 Miami Hurricanes are often regarded as one of the greatest teams of all time. The USC Trojans and Florida Gators each secured two national championships in the first decade, and the Alabama Crimson Tide rose to prominence in 2009, with the Clemson Tigers also making their mark.
Four teams have claimed national championships in the five seasons played so far in the 2020s. The Georgia Bulldogs stand out as the only team to have won two national championships, with Alabama, the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes winning the others. After Georgia achieved back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022, many speculated the Bulldogs might embark on a run similar to Alabama's, which saw the Crimson Tide win six national championships in 12 seasons.
However, the last two seasons have not gone as planned for Georgia. After finishing the regular season undefeated in 2023, the Bulldogs seemed poised to become the second team to win three consecutive national championships, joining the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who won three straight from 1934-36. But after losing to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, Georgia did not qualify for the College Football Playoff.

Georgia entered the 2024 season with the goal of rectifying the disappointments of 2023. Despite suffering two losses during the regular season, the Bulldogs faced the Texas Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game, where they emerged victorious with a score of 22-19, earning a spot in the playoff. Georgia was awarded the No. 2 seed but was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 23-10.
On "The Paul Finebaum Show," SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum expressed his belief that Georgia is no longer the dominant team it once was.
"I think Georgia is fractionally below where they've been," Finebaum said. "It's just a matter of, if they remain steady, they're a contender. If they slip a little bit, they're Alabama from last year."
Alabama finished the 2024 season with a record of 9-4, suffering three of those losses to teams that had five or more losses themselves. As a result, Alabama was left out of the playoff picture.
Meanwhile, Georgia will strive to avoid a similar fate. Last season, the Bulldogs finished 11-3, marking their most losses since 2018 and the third-highest total during head coach Kirby Smart's tenure, which began in 2016.
Smart hopes to get Georgia back on track and regain the program's former glory, aiming to win the national championship in 2025.
