Patriots training camp primer: Everything you need to know about Day 8

Coming off their second off-day of training camp, the New England Patriots are in for an intense stretch of work. Starting Monday, the team of head coach Mike Vrabel will practice on five consecutive days.

Here is what you need to know about the first of those sessions.

Schedule​

Business as usual is over at Patriots camp on Monday. The eighth practice of this year’s training camp will not be open to the public: while originally scheduled as such, it has been moved indoors due to inclement weather and therefore can no longer accommodate fans.

• 10:15 a.m. ET: Practice
• ca. 12:15 p.m. ET: Player availability (RB Lan Larison, WR Romeo Doubs, LT Will Campbell, DT Milton Williams, S Kevin Byard III, S Dell Pettus)

Story of the day​

Will there be any changes on the injury front? Coming off their second off-day, the Patriots will be hoping for reinforcements either through the non-football injury or physically unable to perform list, or in the form of some other absentees returning to action. Meanwhile, another question is if any of the players who were limited participants on Saturday — RB Rhamondre Stevenson, WR A.J. Brown, RT Morgan Moses, ED Gabe Jacas, CB Christian Gonzalez, CB Marcus Jones — will see an uptick in reps.

Injuries to monitor​

NFI: RB Terrell Jennings, S Brenden Schooler

PUP: TE C.J. Dippre, ED Harold Landry III

Injured: OT James Hudson III, OL Caedan Wallace, CB Carlton Davis III

Absent: FB Reggie Gilliam, LG Alijah Vera-Tucker

The Patriots’ NFI list saw a change since the most recent practice on Saturday, with second-round rookie Gabe Jacas making his practice debut. However, the session also saw offensive linemen James Hudson and Caedan Wallace get banged up, while fullback Reggie Gilliam was absent for a second day this camp.

Players to watch​

RB Lan Larison: The second-year runner had a challenging practice on Saturday, including losing a fumble during 11-on-11s. With fellow roster bubble back Jam Miller having started to string solid practices together lately, Larison needs to show a short memory and begin making some of the plays that Miller has recently made.

ED Elijah Ponder: With Gabe Jacas looming (and Harold Landry as well), Ponder’s time as a starter-level edge might be nearing its end. He better makes most of the high-level opportunities still awarded to him, something he was unable to do on Saturday.

CB Karon Prunty: Consistency is one of the biggest problems for rookie players in the NFL, which means that Prunty will be tasked with keeping his foot on the pedal on Monday. The fifth-round draft pick, after all, had a good practice on Saturday but needs to keep stacking days in order to separate himself from the bunch in the race for a backup cornerback job.

S Dell Pettus and S Mike Brown: Pettus, like Karon Prunty, managed to snatch an interception on Saturday. He seemingly finds himself ahead of Brown in the competition for the third safety spot at the moment, but the tides can change quickly in training camp. Any dip in performance, and that particular battle might be turned on its head.
