Are the New England Patriots in the market for another quarterback?

According to Bleacher Report’s Zach Bachar, the Patriots have reason to sign free agent quarterbacks Russell Wilson or Jimmy Garoppolo to add depth to their roster this offseason.

The Patriots made the decision to go with Tommy DeVito as their backup quarterback this offseason, signing him to a two-year deal in free agency. New England released last season’s QB2, Joshua Dobbs, earlier in the offseason, making way for DeVito to rise up in the depth chart.

New England selected Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton with the No. 234 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, creating another three-quarterback lineup on the team. However, DeVito has only played in 12 games in his career, eight of which he’s started to date, and Morton has yet to set foot on an NFL field.

Russell and Garoppolo are both Super Bowl champions who have excelled as volume passers in the league. Wilson, a former second-team All-Pro honoree, regressed in 2025 as a member of the New York Giants but remains skilled and mobile enough to be a high-end backup in the league. Garoppolo is an excellent pocket passer who has years of experience playing for the Patriots from 2014-2016.

Patriots starting quarterback and 2025 AP NFL MVP runner-up Drake Maye has the keys to the offense, but New England has the choice to pursue either Wilson or Garoppolo to provide leadership, championship intangibles and quality play behind Maye next season.
