New England Patriots legend Matthew Slater is excited about what quarterback Drake Maye brings to the table headed into his third NFL season.

In a recent appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub, he mentioned the team's current ceiling with Maye at quarterback as limitless. The 23-year-old helped lead the Patriots back to the Super Bowl in only his second NFL season. He also earned his first All-Pro nod and placed second behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford in the MVP race.

By the end of the season, he racked up 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions. It was a much bigger leap of improvement than most expected. If he can make that big of a jump in Year 2, what will Year 3 look like?

"Look, I'm extremely biased because I think Drake is a great young man and obviously he's a special player, but you know, I think you can't really put a ceiling on what they can accomplish with him," said Slater. "You know, I think last year he looked really comfortable in Josh's system, and as he continues to get acclimated and has more command over the offense, the sky is the limit. He's such a unique talent in this league, and it's certainly an exciting time for the team. You can really feel the buzz, but you saw it last year like this kid is going to be a special, special player."

The Patriots obviously view things similarly to Slater, which is why they've worked so hard in surrounding their young quarterback with elite talent.

They improved the offensive line, drafted a young tight end and acquired a pair of stud wide receivers in A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs. Entering Year 3, Maye will have more offensive weapons than he's ever had in an offense. He will also have more experience and knowledge of the systems in place to get the most out of the talent around him.
