Patriots Given Less Than Ideal News on Christian Gonzalez's Contract Situation originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots have some of the best young players in the NFL, and that's always a good problem to have.
However, there's a contract problem that now has to be spoken about, including one with star defensive back Christian Gonzalez. Gonzalez, a youngster who has arguably been the best in football at his position over the past few years, was expected to get a new contract sometime in the near future.
Reports had indicated, including public comments from owner Robert Kraft, that the team is and was willing to make him the highest-paid player at his position. However, according to the latest report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it doesn't sound like contract talks have gone too well for both sides.
“Gonzalez’s (contract talks) don’t seem to me like they have advanced that far,” Rapoport said.
“The hope is at some point to get a new deal, but as of right now, it’s unclear whether or not that will actually happen. Wouldn’t be surprised, for instance, if he ended up waiting till next year. Either way, when he gets paid, he’s going to be very, very rich. It’s just a matter of when it actually happens.”
From Gonzalez's standpoint, it's not a terrible idea to wait if he's willing to bet on his play.
Gonzalez is obviously one of the best players in football, so his play isn't too big of an issue. The only problem here would potentially be dealing with an injury, so that's a risk he'd have to be willing to take.
The Patriots also have to be careful here that he doesn't get upset about not getting his money when he wants it, if he wants a deal now.
