New England Patriots safety Kevin Byard had high praise for quarterback Drake Maye in the latest episode of Forged in Foxborough.

Byard signed with the Patriots in free agency and figures to be a key addition to the defensive unit. The three-time First-Team All-Pro safety is joining an elite defense that is returning most of the same group from the 2025 team that made it to Super Bowl LX.

Even though Byard is a defensive leader, he knows the value a quarterback like Maye brings to an NFL team.

“That’s a guy you wanna play for," said Byard. "...The sky is the limit for this guy. He can be one of the best quarterbacks in this league for a long time. ...Over these years that he’s gonna be here in New England and playing, you’re gonna get a lot of guys that wanna come play with him. ...He has that type of aura and that type of ability.”

Maye was the runner-up for the NFL MVP award behind Matthew Stafford in only his second NFL season. What will the third-year leap look like in his professional journey?

Byard now looks to join a defensive unit willing to do everything in its power to get and keep the ball in Maye's hands.
