Patriots' Eliot Wolf Responds To Question About Stefon Diggs Returning originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New England Patriots' executive vice president of player personnel, Eliot Wolf, spoke to the media on Tuesday before the NFL Combine and was asked about whether Stefon Diggs would be back.
Diggs has a $26 million cap hit next season, and given his age and off-the-field situation, many experts are tabbing him as a cut candidate. He was a 1,000-yard receiver, but the Patriots will need more out of him with a cap hit that big. Wolf did not give a clear answer about Diggs' future, but noted that conversations were underway.
"I'm not going to get into any specific players today," Wolf said on Tuesday. "There are certain conversations that we're having, and we'll see what happens with everyone."
Diggs was the Patriots' best receiver last season. However, the Patriots either need to add more weapons or get more out of Diggs. He ranked 16th in receiving yards last season, but he has the 11th biggest cap hit among receivers in football next season.
Diggs was a key part of the Patriots' success, but he may not be worth $20-plus million anymore. The Patriots may be interested in keeping him on a restructured deal, and that is perhaps the conversation Wolf and Diggs' representation are having. The Patriots could look to replace him in free agency if they decide to move on.
It's not a situation where the Patriots cannot afford him, but rather a situation where they could get a better player for the same price on the open market.
