Patrick Sandoval Injury Update: Red Sox Pitcher Set to Make Long-Awaited 2026 Debut on Thursday Against White Sox originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There’s good news regarding a Red Sox pitcher prior to the All-Star break. Patrick Sandoval, out of action since June 2024, will make his 2026 debut today, July 9.
Sandoval, 29, makes his return to the mound, facing the White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago. This comes after undergoing Tommy John surgery not long after signing a two-year deal with Boston in December 2024.
“This whole process has been mentally draining and challenging, obviously,” Sandoval told MLB.com. “The physical stuff, the setbacks and the pain, or whatever, but it took a toll mentally, for sure, and it just taught me a lot.”
Prior to signing with the Red Sox, Sandoval accumulated a 19-45 record and a 4.01 ERA with the Angels, striking out 529 batters in 107 starts. Requiring surgery in 2024, the Red Sox would sign Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25 million contract in the offseason.

Rehabbing in AA Portland and AAA Worcester, Sandoval posted a 1.13 ERA in two starts with the former club. He struck out eleven batters in eight innings. In AAA, he posted an 0-2 record, a 4.60 ERA, and eleven strikeouts in 15 innings pitched.

Sandoval threw over 68 pitches in his last outing. Manager Chad Tracy, per MassLive, said his pitch count will likely be between that and 80 pitches against Chicago.
“I’ll have to talk to the medical and rehab guys,” Tracy said. “He’ll probably be between there and 80. I don’t think you’re going to see a 95-pitch outing in any sort of sense. But somewhere in there likely is the outcome.”
Sandoval’s return to the rotation comes at the perfect time. Connelly Early was placed on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. Ranger Suarez also got hit with the injury bug, with his status uncertain due to left adductor and groin tightness.
Representing the Red Sox for the first time on a big league mound, it might take some time to adjust, but Sandoval is ready to get to work.
“I'm sure it's going to take a few more (outings) to totally feel like I'm actually there again. You can’t replace the adrenaline you get in a big league stadium, big league fans and big leaguers in the box,” Sandoval said.
