They're teammates on the field in Kansas City, but now they're rivals in the AL Central. MLB insider Jeff Passan broke the news on Wednesday morning that Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is buying a minority stake in the Cleveland Guardians, his hometown ball club.
"I've been lucky enough to have a front-row seat to good ownership in my career, and I know the best teams prioritize culture," Kelce told ESPN. "Everyone is there to play their role, and right now, I'm here to observe and learn and really to support the team and the city when and where I can."
But now he'll have to battle it out with his quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, who owns a stake in the Guardians' division rival Kansas City Royals.
Mahomes had a perfect response to the announcement his favorite target and best friend was getting involved with the Guardians.
The pair knows they'll have a friendly rivalry on the diamond going forward.
"We're both as competitive as it gets, so you know there will be some bragging rights on the line when we play our division games," Kelce explained on the new rivalry. "But I really have a lot of respect for the Royals and their organization. It was a fun time in Kansas City cheering them on for their World Series win in 2015."
Congrats to Travis.
