The Kansas City Chiefs look extremely motivated during training camp. Kansas City does not want a repeat of last year’s disastrous 6-11 campaign during the 2026 season. That increased sense of urgency has already led to some chippiness during recent training camp practices.
ESPN’s Nate Taylor noted that Kansas City had multiple physical altercations between players during Saturday’s training camp practice.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes spoke his mind about the high level of competitiveness during camp over the past few weeks. He seems to think that it is exactly what the Chiefs need.

“Going against the same guys and just being competitive, I think that’s what’s been great about this camp,” Mahomes said. “It’s super competitive on both sides, so little scuffles here and there but nothing crazy. As long as we keep it like that and keep competing, that’s where you get the best team you can get.”
Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Kingsley Suamataia had a dust up during 11-on-11 drills. There was also a heated exchange between Kenneth Walker III and Alohi Gilman, which required multiple players to separate the two.
Saturday’s practice was Kansas City’s sixth consecutive practice before a scheduled off day on Sunday. Perhaps the grueling nature of the team’s practice schedule led to some increased animosity.
“It’s kind of unusual, and we haven’t done that in the past,” special teams coordinator Dave Toub said. “It was a little bit of a grinder. It was chippy. That’s how you know. It’s hot and that’s football sometimes.”
On one hand, it is good to see that the Chiefs have their edge back ahead of the 2026 season. Now they just need to keep that energy directed at their opponents instead of themselves.
Next up for the Chiefs is their first preseason game against the Rams. That matchup kicks off on August 15th at 4PM ET from Arrowhead Stadium.
