Joe Burrow made headlines for his comments in a press conference yet again. He didn’t outright predict the Bengals were going to win a Super Bowl like he did earlier this offseason, but he came about as close as possible.
When asked whether he and the team are feeling pressure at this point in the season, Burrow responded that he hopes they are, even going so far as to say he thrives under pressure.
“I want everyone to be talking about what I’m saying in press conferences.”
Well, Joe, here I am doing just that.
Mainly focusing on the part of your presser where you said you feel the same about the Bengals as you did before the 2019 season at LSU, which many would say was the best season by a team and a quarterback in college football history.
LSU wasn’t a national championship favorite before that season began. Burrow himself had, I believe, 40-1 odds to win the Heisman Trophy in the preseason. Yet the Tigers became the most dominant team in football, and Burrow ran away with the award, ultimately becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
That team was filled with underrated players and three-star prospects. Guys who had to earn everything. Joe feels that way about this Bengals team.
Usually, when a quarterback who hasn’t made the playoffs in three years makes such a bold claim, the media takes him to task. However, Tony Kornheiser agreed with Burrow on the TV show Pardon the Interruption, saying he isn’t Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert or Dak Prescott. He’s a quarterback who has won in the playoffs, with a 5-2 record, multiple AFC Championship Game appearances and a trip to the Super Bowl.
I think Burrow has rightfully earned a long leash in terms of what he can and can’t say in a press conference. Part of that is what he did with a historically abysmal organization like the Cincinnati Bengals, leading them to a Super Bowl in just his second season and turning them into a perennial contender when he’s healthy.
He constantly backs up what he says with his play on the field, consistently being a top-five quarterback since he entered the league.
Kornheiser’s respect for and understanding of what Burrow is saying not only speak to the pedestal many put Burrow on, but also to why his claims about what the Bengals could be this season are believable.
Burrow doesn’t just talk. When he says something, he means it. Kornheiser notices that.

#Bengals QB Joe Burrow says this year's team reminds him of the legendary 2019 LSU squad — and he wants that pressure on this team.
