In the series-clinching Game 5 loss to the Boston Celtics, the Orlando Magic were without top star Paolo Banchero for a big portion of the second half as he battled through foul trouble. Halfway through the third quarter of Game 5, Banchero was called for his fifth foul in the game, a moment that head coach Jamhal Mosley said swung the series in the favor of Boston.
Banchero, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 draft, has established himself as the face of the Magic franchise, and one of the best young players in the league. Having missed over a month of action due to an oblique injury, Banchero was limited to just 46 games this year but averaged a career-high 25.9 points per game while helping Orlando clinch the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference.
Speaking to the media after the Game 5 loss, Banchero explained his frustration with the officiating crew, and what he said to them after he was assessed his fifth foul.
"I was trying my best not to foul, I knew I had four fouls," Banchero said while discussing the fifth foul call he received after he was tagged with a foul on Jaylen Brown. "I feel like I stopped short of him going up. He went up with his elbows up, hit me in the face and they called the foul on me. He did the same thing to Cory Joseph and they called the foul on Cory. I'm not sure what that rule is, maybe I had an misunderstanding of what the rule is there, but I was trying my best not to foul."
The series loss to the Boston Celtics should come as a learning lesson for Banchero and the Orlando Magic, who figure to be a contending team for seasons to come. Orlando played Boston tough and showed their physicality throughout the series, and with Banchero leading the team, the future should be bright for Orlando.
