On Tuesday, the Boston Celtics eliminated the Orlando Magic in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs. Paolo Banchero did everything he could to lead the Magic past the defending champions. However, it wasn't enough as they suffered a devastating 120-89 defeat.
Banchero played fewer than 30 minutes and had 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists. He was efficient from beyond the arc as he made half of his four attempts. His co-star, Franz Wagner, also stepped up big time to save their season.
The German forward had 25 points and four assists. But that wasn't enough as the Celtics cruised to earn a spot in the semifinal round of the postseason.

A big part of the Magic's loss was due to Banchero's limited time on the court. Heading into the second half, the former Duke star had two fouls. However, he picked up two quick fouls early in the third quarter. With 9:46 left in the period, the 22-year-old got his fifth foul as he tried to contest Jaylen Brown's layup attempt, which led him to sit for the rest of the quarter.
His dad, Mario Banchero, expressed his opinion about the officiating on X.
".......at this point it's a discredit to the league. Smh," Banchero's dad posted on the social media platform.
Following their elimination, Banchero was vocal about his frustration with how the game was officiated. The Magic star explained that he was trying his best not to commit a foul. Unfortunately for the first-time All-Star, he was called for the defensive foul.
"I feel like I stopped short of him [Brown] going up. He went up with his elbows out, hit me in the face, and they called it on me."
"He did the same thing to Cory Joseph, and they called it on Cory. Not sure what that rule is. Maybe I have a misunderstanding of what that rule is, but I was trying my best not to foul," Banchero said.
Despite the loss, Banchero has shown improvement in his second postseason run. He finished the series averaging 29.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists through five games against the defending champions.
Wednesday's elimination is the second straight year that Banchero and the Magic were first-round exits. Last year, they challenged the Cleveland Cavaliers and played seven games.
