The Carolina Panthers have been urged to keep tabs on Tampa Bay Buccaneers star QB Baker Mayfield during the 2026 season by NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.
The Buccaneers and Mayfield did not reach a new contract agreement before the start of training camp. Mayfield is set to play out the final year of his contract and he isn't particularly happy with the offers Tampa Bay made him.
Mayfield is now set to hit the market in 2027. There's a chance he could be on a team next season, and maybe things get really bad between Mayfield and the Buccaneers, leading the former No. 1 overall pick to request a trade.
Bryce Young is set to make $12.1 million this season in the fourth year of his rookie deal. His fifth-year option is worth a guaranteed $25.9 million.
Most NFL insiders don't expect the Panthers to sign Young to an extension before the 2026 season since the QB has been too inconsistent. Young has to play well again next season to earn an extension.
If Young struggles in 2026, maybe Mayfield and the Panthers reunite.
"The Panthers are defending division champs, and if Young can build on what he accomplished last season, Carolina won't be in the quarterback market," Knox wrote. "However, the franchise should at least keep an eye on Mayfield just in case its current quarterback plan goes south."
Last season, Young finished with 3,011 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 216 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He led the Panthers to the playoffs for the first time since the 2017 campaign.
The first overall pick in the 2023 draft, Young enters this season with 8,291 passing yards, 49 passing touchdowns, 30 interceptions, 718 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns in a Carolina uniform.
For Tampa Bay last season, Mayfield put up 3,693 passing yards and 26 passing touchdowns. He's one of the top QBs in the NFL.
It will be fascinating to see how Young and Mayfield perform this season. The Panthers and Buccaneers play each other twice.
Even though the Panthers won the NFC South title last season, they finished with a sub-.500 record and needed help in Week 18 to win the division. Dave Canales and Co. must prove this season that they didn't just benefit from playing in the league's weakest division.
