Does the Carolina Panthers' backfield have room for a former Pro Bowler?

That thought has come courtesy of CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo, who recently played matchmaker for some of the NFL's top remaining free agents. DeArdo covered running back Najee Harris, and linked the 2020 Pro Bowler to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

But he also threw in the defending NFC South champions as an option for the 28-year-old rusher . . .

Another team that might be a good fit for Harris is the Carolina Panthers after they lost Rico Dowdle in free agency. Harris could fill Dowdle's role while taking some of Chuba Hubbard's workload.

After spending the first four years of his pro career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Harris joined the Los Angeles Chargers for the 2025 campaign. But that stint was stopped short, as the former first-round pick sustained an Achilles tear in the third game of the season.

While Carolina's running back room isn't exactly a major strength, it is a bit occupied. In fact, one of their backs is already mounting a return from a devastating injury of his own.

That'd be Jonathon Brooks, who was limited to just three games over his first two years in the NFL due to a pair of ACL tears. Brooks impressed through spring workouts and seems likely to take the reins from Hubbard at some point in 2026.

So while Harris' comeback story should be a good one, it probably won't take place in Carolina.
