The San Diego Padres continued to insert themselves back in the wild-card race against the Miami Marlins, as they posted an impressive 7-2 win to send the Marlins to their 11th straight loss.
This one was tight early, though, as the Padres had to counter a fine start from Eury Perez, who was tough throughout. San Diego broke on top in the third inning, with red-hot Ty France once again in the middle of the action. The rally came with two out, as Jake Cronenworth walked, Manny Machado doubled and France brought them home on a single to left.
The Padres mixed and matched pitchers in this one, using Randy Vasquez as a de facto opener. Vasquez gave up a run in the top of the third as the Marlins cut the Padres lead in the bottom of the third, starting when Eury Perez was hit by a ptich and Jakob Marsee singled him to third.
The Marlins then scored on a rare sacrifice fly/double play combination, as Otto Lopez did the fly ball honors and right fielder Gavin Sheets runned down Marsee at second.
JP Sears then took over and held the line, and the Padres padded their lead wiht an insurance run in the seventh. Jackson Merrill started the rally with a double, and a pair of sacrifice flies brought him up, with Luis Rengifo moving Merrill to third and Gavin Sheets bringing him home.
San Diego scored again in the eighth with Perez gone and Dax Fulton on the mound, as Jake Cronenworth walked and stole second. France struck again as he drove him Cronenworth with a single to make it 4-1. The Padres kept hitting, and Jace Bowen drove in two more with an RBI single to make it 6-1.
The two teams traded single runs in the eighth and ninth, with the Marlins getting theirs on an RBI single from Kyle Stowers, and Cronenworth once again provied some offense with an RBI single to counter.
The Padres wound up using four pitchers in this one, and they all contributed. Sears was the best with 3-1/3 shutout innings to get his third win of the season, but Yuki Matsui and Matt Waldron added three more innings of one-run relief that allowed the Padres to avoid using Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller.
The win tied the two teams with identical 52-53 records, and the Padres are now just three games out of the wild card with three teams ahead of them.
