The San Diego Padres continued their slow slide in the NL West with a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, as the Padres offered more offensive futility as they once again played like sellers with the trade deadline approaching.
The Padres have dropped 11 of 14, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com, and once again they failed to take advantage of a struggling starter as they went up against Shane Bieber.
The chances were there, but Xander Bogaerts was the only Padres hitter who took advantage of them. Bogaerts has been dreadful for over two months now with an average of just .198 since the start of May, according to Cassavell, but manager Craig Stammen moved him up to third in the lineup, and last night Bogaerts responded with a two-run homer in the first inning to get San Diego off to a 2-0 start.
“He’s had a tough stretch here, the last couple months,” Stammen said. “Trying to give him a little confidence boost, a place in the lineup he’s hit a lot of times in his career -- and done very well there. Just trying to mix it up and see if we can get one of … our best players, get him going.”
Unfortunately, not much happened with the Padres offensively after that, and Toronto slowly took control of the game off starter JP Sears. The Blue Jays got a run in the fourth via an RBI double by Alejandro Kirk, and Toronto picked up four more in the fifth on an RBI infield hit by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., followed by a three-run homer by Kazuma Okamoto to make it 5-2.
Bieber lasted 4-2/3 innings, and the Blue Jays bullpen stepped up to keep San Diego from scoring again until the ninth inning. Jackson Merrill submitted an RBI single to close the gap, but that was all the Padres could manage aginst closer Louis Varland, who picked up his 19th save of the season.
No one is coming to save San Diego’s season, though, as the Padres got ten hits but could only come up with three runs. The loss sent the Padres back to two games below .500, and they’re now 5-1/2 games out of the wild-card race with trade rumors swirling around closer Mason Miller.
The Padres will take another shot at winning tonight as Walker Buehler tries to recover from two disastrous starts, with Trey Yesavage going for Toronto.
