How's this for a potential draft twist? The Green Bay Packers traded up for a wide receiver -- a position they haven't selected in the first round since 2002 -- to start Chad Reuter's latest seven-round mock draft for NFL.com. Instead of staying put at No. 23 overall, Reuter had the Packers move up four spots to No. 19 and get Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka at the price of exchanging a third-round pick for a fifth-round pick.
Egbuka is a versatile, high-floor pass-catcher who set the Ohio State record for receptions. Mark Oldacres of Packers Wire profiled Egbuka and his fit in Green Bay here. But if he worth moving up in the first round to get, especially at the cost of moving down two rounds later in the draft? It would be a long wait between pick No. 54 in the second round and pick No. 124 in the fourth round for Brian Gutekunst. But Egbuka could be exactly the kind of high reliability receiver the Packers need in the passing game, and Green Bay has been burned before in the first round -- just losing out on receivers such as Justin Jefferson and Brandon Aiyuk in past drafts.
In the second round, Reuter sent Ohio State edge rusher JT Tuimoloau to Green Bay, giving the Packers back-to-back Buckeyes at need positions. He is another high-floor prospect who could be ready to play right away at a premium defensive spot.
On Day 3, the Packers got two cornerbacks, an offensive lineman from Wisconsin, a center who visited Green Bay before the draft and a potential replacement for TJ Slaton. Oddly, the draft ended with a punter at pick No. 250.
The class would be lacking in the middle, even if Egbuka and Tuimoloau could be a terrific 1-2 punch to start the draft.
