The Green Bay Packers released kicker Brandon McManus with the post-June 1st designation, which will save the Packers more money on the salary cap in 2026 but push some of the dead money to the 2027 season.
According to Over the Cap, releasing McManus with a post-June 1st designation will create $2,611,765 in cap space in 2026, accelerate $2,666,666 in dead money to the 2026 salary cap and push $1,666,668 to the 2027 salary cap.
The Packers already paid McManus a $1 million roster bonus in 2026. The rest of the dead money is acceleration of his $5 million signing bonus on the three-year deal he signed last year.
With the designation, the Packers will carry McManus' full $5,278,431 cap number on the salary cap through June 1st. But without it, the Packers would have immediately created $4,333,334 in dead money on the 2026 cap -- although there would be no dead cap left over in 2027.
There was no way to avoid the dead money hit. With a June 1st designation, the Packers are choosing to split it between 2026 and 2027 instead of taking it all on the 2026 cap. The team used this same mechanism with the release of Nate Hobbs earlier this offseason. Come June 2nd, the Packers will immediately have almost $7.5 million more in cap space for 2026 -- important space with potential extensions coming for Christian Watson, Tucker Kraft and Devonte Wyatt.
Releasing McManus on Friday clears the way for rookie Trey Smack, a sixth-round pick in the 2026 draft, to take over as Packers kicker.
