The Green Bay Packers designated linebacker and special teamer Nick Niemann for return from injured reserve on Wednesday, opening his 21-day practice window, per Mike Spofford of the team's official site.

The Packers can now give Niemann up to three weeks to get physically ready to play, and he can be activated to the 53-man roster at any time.

Niemann, who led the team in special teams tackles during the first eight weeks of the season, has been on injured reserve since suffering a pectoral injury during the Packers' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Oct. 26.

Niemann's looming return could provide a boost for a special teams unit that has recently lost linebacker Kristian Welch and safety Zayne Anderson to season-ending injuries.

During the Packers' first seven games, Niemann produced 10 solo tackles and one assisted tackle covering kickoffs and punts. He led all NFL special teamers in solo tackles and ranked third on the Packers in special teams snaps (115) through the first eight weeks.

A veteran special teamer with over 1,400 career special teams snaps, Niemann signed with the Packers after being released by the Houston Texans in late August.
