GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers activated defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. from injured reserve and he is expected to play against the Chicago Bears on Dec. 20.
Cox went on injured reserve after suffering a groin injury in the season opener and was designated to return Dec. 1.
The Packers are in need of another edge rusher after placing Micah Parsons on injured reserve. Cox, in his third year, had a strong finish to last season and was expected to help the pass rush before he suffered the injury.
To make room for Cox on the 53-man roster, the Packers placed running back MarShawn Lloyd on injured reserve. Lloyd was also designated to return from injured reserve on Dec. 1, but pulled his hamstring in practice and wasn’t ready to play.
The Packers activated him to the 53-man roster on Dec. 17 with the intent of returning him to injured reserve. By putting him on the 53, he is now eligible to return after four games. If the Packers had left him on injured reserve, his season would be over.
The Packers downgraded linebacker/defensive end Collin Oliver to out, but it was more of a technicality. He is on the physically-unable-to-perform list but was designated to return on Dec. 1 and is eligible to play against the Bears if activated to the 53.
The Packers aren’t activating him, so they listed him as out.
The Packers have until Dec. 22 to decide whether to activate him or leave him on injured reserve for the rest of the season. They have the option of doing what they did with Lloyd but would need to create a roster spot for Oliver.
