Draymond Green asked Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle how much longer he plans to coach in the NBA during Carlisle's appearance on The Draymond Green Show.
Carlisle answered with a joke first.
"As long as I can keep dodging out of the way of you on the sidelines probably," Carlisle said.
Carlisle then took the question straight.
"Nobody wants to overstay their welcome. I've got several more years on my contract. I still love it," Carlisle said. "I've got an amazing coaching staff with Lloyd Pierce, Jenny Boucek, Jim Boylen, Isaac Yacob, Jannero Pargo, and a bunch of other great coaches."
Indiana announced a multi-year extension for Carlisle on Aug. 19, 2025, two months after the Finals. Terms were not disclosed, per team policy. Marc Stein of The Stein Line first reported the agreement. The deal Carlisle signed when he returned to Indianapolis in 2021 ran four years at more than $7.25 million annually. He signed one extension before the 2023-24 season and another after the Finals run.
Johnny Carpenter joined the staff that August. Jim Boylen moved to the front of the bench at the same time.
"It's a pleasure to go in everyday. Kevin Pritchard, Chad Buchanan, Ted Wu, the guys in that front office are great, and our players are great guys," Carlisle said. "I want to ride this as long as I can. You go day to day with this and you don't count. You don't count wins, you don't count years, it all accumulates over time."
Carlisle is 1,012-923 as a head coach. He got win No. 1,000 on Jan. 8, 2026, when the Pacers beat Charlotte 114-112 and snapped a 13-game losing streak. Ten coaches had reached the mark before him, and Doc Rivers in November 2021 was the most recent. Rick Adelman is 10th on the career list at 1,042. Carlisle has 81 wins in the playoffs.
Boston took Carlisle in the third round of the 1984 draft, 70th overall, and he won a title as a player in 1986. He joined the New Jersey Nets as an assistant in 1989 and spent 11 seasons as an assistant there, in Portland, and in Indiana. Detroit hired him in 2001. He won Coach of the Year in 2002 and was out after two seasons.
Indiana hired him in 2003, and the Pacers went 61-21 that first year. Dallas hired him in 2008. Carlisle went 555-478 over 13 seasons there and won the 2011 title against Miami. The Pacers fired Nate Bjorkgren on June 9, 2021, and hired Carlisle back later that summer.
Indiana won 25 games in his first season of the second stint, then 35, then 47, then 50 and a trip to Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The Pacers won 19 games last season without Tyrese Haliburton. Carlisle is the franchise's all-time winningest NBA head coach.
This will be Carlisle's 25th season as a head coach and his 38th in the league. He turned 66 in October.
At Summer League in Las Vegas, Carlisle said Haliburton had been playing 5-on-5 for a long time. Carlisle also spoke there about Kobe Brown, who re-signed on a two-way contract on July 9.
Carlisle is 30 wins from passing Adelman for 10th on the career list.
