The Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Girls’ Sweet 16 started Wednesday at Rupp Arena in Lexington.
Owensboro Catholic makes its State Tournament debut Thursday. The 3rd Region champion Lady Aces will meet Letcher County Central out of the 14th Region at 5 p.m. CT.
Catholic will take a 26-9 record into the State Tournament first round. Letcher County Central is 23-10.
Catholic had one of its best offensive games of the season in its 51-32 win over Daviess County in the 3rd Region championship game Sunday. The Lady Aces made 19-of-33 shots from the floor for 57.6% against DC. They had struggled shooting the ball for much of the season.
“I think the shooting concerns have been more about confidence,” Catholic coach Michael Robertson said. “I feel like we are in a good place mentally that we will shoot the ball with confidence.
Claudia Munsey made 4-of-6 from 3-point range against DC and scored 14 points. Sophia Newby made all five of her shots from the floor and all four of her free throws for 14 points. Taylor Mannahan scored 17 points and was 6-of-7 from the field.
Robertson thinks his team will be ready for the moment of playing in the State Tournament.
“This team has been refocused since the district championship loss, and focused on us being a team and playing together,” Robertson said.
Catholic has been at its best when it is aggressive guarding and getting steals, which has led to better offensive execution.
“We are playing some of our best basketball on the defensive end here at the end of the season,” Robertson said. “And that is leading to us being more confident on the offensive end.”
Mannahan, Munsey and Katie Hagan each average 12-plus points a game. Newby averages 7.2 rebounds a game and Hagan grabs 6.7 rebounds a game.
For Letcher County Central, Alli Bailey scores 11.1 points a game and Molly Caudill scores 10.5 points a game. Sadie Johnson is averaging 10.7 points a game.
“They are going to be a very physical team that will try to impose their style of play and try to pound the ball inside and then kick out for threes,” Robertson said of Letcher County. “The key will be for us to try to make the game 94 feet and make them run with us because I think that is where we can have an advantage in this game.
“I’m not sure we want to get into a grind it out game with them. So, in typical Lady Aces fashion we will really try to impose our fast pace game upon them getting after them on the defensive end.”
