Owensboro Catholic handled the first round of the 9th District girls basketball tournament with a 64-34 win over Apollo High School on Monday night.
The Lady Aces were led by Taylor Mannahan with 18 points and four 3-pointers. Claudia Munsey scored 17 points with three 3-pointers. Layla Martin added 10 points for Catholic.
“Winning the first game of the district tournament is great,” Catholic coach Michael Robertson said. “If you lose you go home, your season is over.”
Catholic will now play Daviess County for the district championship on Thursday at 7 p.m. Catholic beat DC for the district title last season, but Daviess County won the 3rd Region championship.
Against Apollo, Catholic shot well from the floor at 49% and made 41% from 3. Catholic got outrebounded 38-19, and coach Michael Robertson called that unacceptable.
“We didn’t rebound the ball like we should,” Robertson said. “We’ve got to get better at boxing out, we watched the ball get shot and hoped the ball came to us.”
Hitting the basket was a positive for Catholic
“We shot the ball well from the 3-point line tonight,” Robertson said. “We got off to a good start. Taylor played really well, she was a menace. Katie (Hagan) had six assists and six steals. Claudia had six steals herself.
“I was proud overall. We had a lot of girls who came off the bench and they all contributed in some form or fashion.”
Hagan scored six points. Betsy Moore scored five points. Hallie Boarman and Scarlett Isenbarger each scored three points for Catholic. Sadie Blair added two points.
The Lady Aces are 23-8.
Apollo’s season ended at 4-22. LaShay Vera led Apollo with 14 points and Mattingly Taylor added nine points. Maleah Potter (four points), Aubrey Johnson (three points), Eriyah Curry (one point), Emersyn Bullington (one point) also scored for Apollo.
