Thousands of runners took over the streets of San Diego on Sunday morning for the 28th annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series.
The marathon route spanned across multiple neighborhoods, including downtown San Diego, Hillcrest, North Park, Normal Heights, Mission Valley, and others, before reaching the finish line at Waterfront Park, where there was a party with live bands. Roads were also closed for the participants in downtown, North Park, Hillcrest, Normal Heights and Mission Valley.
Sunday’s main event featured both the half-marathon and the marathon, with runners taking on 13.1 and 26.2-mile routes. The event was lively and filled with energy, with cheer teams and live bands helping boost the spirits of the runners.
“Today was everything Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego is known for, a celebration of running, music, community and the spirit of this city,” Colleen McDonald, Race Director of Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego, said. “From the energy at the start line to the live music on course and the finish-line celebration downtown, the 28th annual event delivered an unforgettable weekend for runners, spectators, and the San Diego community...”
According to race organizers, Sara Bagnell of San Diego claimed the women’s marathon title with a time of 2:57:46, while Isaac Hernandez of Willow Park, Texas, won the men’s marathon in 2:28:54. In the half-marathon, Anthony Solis of Barstow finished first among men in 1:04:18, and Yilin Wu of San Marino took the women’s title in 1:16:00.
With over 30,000 runners participating in the marathon over the weekend, which included a 5K race on Saturday around Balboa Park, event organizers said that there was a 10% increase in participants from 2025. Among them, nearly half of the U.S.-based participants were from the San Diego-Carlsbad area, while 70% of them participated in this marathon for the first time.
Among the finishers, 39 runners have participated in every Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego race since it first started in 1998.
“Their continued commitment remains a defining part of the event’s history and a powerful reminder of the community that has grown with Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego over nearly three decades,” organizers said in a press release.
