NORMAN — For the third consecutive season, Oklahoma softball is not the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Sooners are the No. 3 seed, it was announced Sunday, as Alabama was selected as the top overall seed. OU was upset by Georgia in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament on Thursday.
The Sooners (48-8) will take on Binghamton (20-25) to open the tournament at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Love's Field.
Michigan (34-20) and Kansas (35-19) are also in the Norman Regional.
Six SEC teams were selected as top-eight national seeds. The Sooners won the SEC regular-season title for the second consecutive season.
OU won all eight of its SEC series this season and was on its way to the No. 1 overall seed if it won the conference tournament.
"Don't care. I can't control it. I can't fight for it," Sooners coach Patty Gasso said last week when ask is she cared about seeding. "There's nothing we can do. How they're going to pull this together, I don't know. I would hope we are in the top three. You never know.
"But as long as we're home for the next two weekends once we get back, then we're OK. Whoever is meant to come here. And sometimes they line them up (how) I think, sometimes the way (they do it) they don't. But there's a lot of coincidences, so we'll see how this goes. But whatever comes our way, we gotta be ready for it."
Gasso has now reached the tournament for the 31st time at OU.
The Sooners fell to Texas Tech in the Women's College World Series semifinals last season. Gasso will look to reclaim the national title with a roster featuring SEC Freshman of the Year Kendall Wells as well as other first team selections Gabbie Garcia, Kai Minor and Ella Parker.
OU hasn't lost a regional game since 2019, has made nine consecutive WCWS appearances and has won 15 consecutive regionals.
Friday's game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
Longtime OU assistant Melyssa Lombardi's Oregon Ducks are the No. 14 overall seed, potentially setting up a Super Regional matchup with the Sooners at Love's Field. Idaho State, Saint Mary's and Mississippi State are also in the Eugene Regional.
